RW Johnson and Health Affairs just updated their policy brief on waste in the US health care system. It’s 5 pages short and clear and definitely worth reading.

In a recent post about the new MA Health Information Exchange, I suggested that a patient-accessible connection to the HIE could save a patient thousands of dollars per year. And now there’s a real-world, […]

There are two ways this can happen: Blue Button and APCD. The claims information is presumably available in both places.
Blue Button files are nicely detailed and available from the payor (Medicare, Aetna, […]

Our new health information exchange went live today starting with the ceremonial transmission of Governor Patrick’s health record from one hospital to another. The best description of the event is on John […]

Indeed, this response should not be adequate for any patient.
What laws or regulations is the Data Release Committee following?
Why do we, the patient, have to struggle to know exactly how much we paid and […]

Our state has a split healthcare personality. Massachusetts wants to be a leader in health care but is widely regarded as an outlier when it comes to health care policy. Our care and cost structure is unusually […]

My comment is to the lack of advocacy and detachment of most physicians from this problem. The AMA formally lobbied to delay implementation of ICD-10 – detailed codes that could help clarify charges. The AMA also […]

Dorothy, thank you for bringing up the Grand Junction example. It was the doctors in Grand Junction that took the initiative.
The medical profession is diminished when it points to everyone else as the problem […]

Scott Adams introduced “confusopoly” in his book “The Dilbert Future” defining it as “a group of companies with similar products who intentionally confuse customers instead of competing on price”.

Adrian Gropper wrote a new post, A Patient Perspective on the New Health Records Regulations 1 year, 2 months ago
The federal government has been busy trying to get doctors and hospitals to use electronic health records (EHR) and to make appropriate access to the records easier. They do this by issuing regulations for EHRs […]

Adrian Gropper wrote a new blog post: Employers Encourage Price Shopping with Rebates 1 year, 7 months ago
This Blues CT and NH pilot program is interesting in a couple of ways. Health reform uses the concept of “shared savings” (aka ACOs) as one of the foundations of cost containment in health reform to return part of the money to doctors that make cost-saving decisions. In this case the shared savings return money directly [...]

Stefano’s story is like one I posted http://healthcaresavvy.wbur.org/2011/08/how-to-post-specific-costs-and-services-act-2/ about a month ago. Upcoding is all around, and in my case, the hospital hasn’t budged. What I’ve found so far, is that upcoding seems to be encouraged by a system that prevents the person from knowing what they are being…[Read more]

I’m now in the process of researching this very thing. Partners has promised an explanation of the Point System that maps into Levels that correspond to Codes that then map into Insurance Discounts than then turn into Out Of Pocket Expense for me. Then, of course there’s the possibility of an error in the Documentation [...]

Stephen, your comment about coding is interesting in light of my ongoing post (updated Aug. 23) about billing for an ER visit. Even without estimating wound depth and such, a patient should be able to see how much a provider charges for some of the popular codes such as the 5 CPT codes that characterize [...]

In Act 1 I described how I ended up with an $800 out-of-pocket cost for a very very common 10-minute procedure. In comments to that post I explain why my primary care doctor advised me to go to the ER for a non-emergency procedure and how this seems to have been my only choice, because the Partners [...] -

This site is a fabulous idea, particularly in MA where health care is such big business and health care costs are so much higher than other states. Following my primary care physician’s suggestion, I recently went to a local ER for a non-emergency procedure. The service was superb (the procedure took one ER doctor alone [...]
